Providing literacy assistance to our communities is a vital endeavor.

Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts is committed to providing free literacy assistance and enrichment, primarily through volunteers, for adult residents of South Central Massachusetts with respect and sensitivity to their needs.


Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts provides individualized, one-on-one tutoring at no cost.

The services offered are of two types:

  • Tutoring in English language skills (speaking, reading and writing) for adults whose native language is not English;
  • Tutoring in basic literacy skills (reading and writing) for adults whose native language is English but whose ability in these areas is below the eighth grade level.

In addition to one-on-one tutoring, we offer small group instruction in the following locations:

at Jacob Edwards Library, located at 236 Main Street, Southbridge, MA 01550

  • Every Thursday, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.. Literacy Café
    • drop-in English language  classes
  • Every Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Literacy Café 
    • drop-in English language classes

at the Pearle L. Crawford Memorial Library,  40 Schofield Ave. Dudley, MA

  • Every Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Literacy Café

    • drop-in English language classes

        LVSCM also provides services at the Joshua Hyde Public Library in Sturbridge, the Charlton Public Library in Charlton, and the Chester C. Corbin Public Library in Webster.

Dudley Mass Literacy Cafe

A Literacy Cafe is held on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:30
at the

Pearle L. Crawford Memorial Library
40 Schofield Ave.
Dudley, MA 01571  .
Please stop in for free group English classes.









We deliver these programs through the generosity of our volunteer staff. Each tutor is prepared through eighteen hours of training. In addition, the Executive Director is always available for tutor consultation. As in any volunteer-based endeavor, the demand for our services far outstrips the availability of tutors. If you would like to be part of our volunteer program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least eighteen years of age;
  • You must possess a high school diploma;
  • You must complete our tutor-training program.

The Literacy Volunteers office has a limited library available to tutors and to students.  The Jacob Edwards Library has a large collection of ESL materials for both the tutor and the student.  These resources are available through the Library Catalog.

Verizon Literacy Campus – Provides information for literacy volunteers, including on-line courses.

ESL-Aloud– Guided practice for speaking English designed for people who want to increase their abilities in speaking English as a second language.

BBC Learning English Center – British Broadcasting Company provide global resources for students and tutors.

English Language Center Study Zone – Provides exercises for students from basic to advanced English grammar and usage.
